Acoustic correction intervention in the school canteen using painted polyester fibre panels.

Description

The acoustic correction of the school canteen can be divided into two interventions:

  • ceiling application of polyester fibre panels painted in different colours, of various densities and thicknesses
  • application of panels always in polyester fibre, covered with fireproof Trevira fabric on the walls

 

The solution adopted is optimal for spaces of this size and type because, despite its low cost, it delivers high performance. Indeed, despite the fact that it uses porous materials and therefore typically performs best at medium-high frequencies, the reverberation time tonal color is very neutral, optimizing acoustic comfort in an environment where daily activities that can impact the quality of life of children and teachers take place. Furthermore, the use of water-based paint for the ceiling panels makes them aesthetically pleasing.

Technical Data

Reverberation times were significantly reduced, including those at low frequencies, positively impacting the general acoustic comfort of the environment (figure 1):
T30 ante operam= 3,2 s
T30 post operam= 0,8 s
With these reverberation parameters, the noise introduced into the room will be significantly reduced. Furthermore, the panels were mounted at different distances from the ceiling and walls; as can be seen in Figure 2, while the results at high frequencies are essentially similar, at low frequencies there is a significant improvement in performance.
An improvement in speech intelligibility, a parameter that gives an indication of the comprehensibility of speech, was also observed.
The percentage of sentences or words lost during a conversation goes from an average of 17 to approximately 3: this feature allows you to avoid having to raise your voice level during communication, thus avoiding an increase in background noise, which is especially disturbing during meals.
